DHAKA, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 13 million sacrificial animals, mostly cows and goats, have been prepared for the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival in Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter made the announcement at a press conference in Dhaka Sunday, saying "A total of 1,24,47,337 animals ready for sacrifice."
There will be no crisis of sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid festival, she said, adding 10,379,202 animals are expected to be sacrificed across the country during this year's Eid celebration.
She expressed the hope that the surplus will help stabilize prices, ensuring affordability for people across income levels to sacrifice animals.
Bangladesh's Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock had earlier said last year's Eid al-Adha saw the sacrifice of 10,408,918 animals.
Muslims across Bangladesh will sacrifice animals during the Eid al-Adha festival in the first week of June this year.
The festival is celebrated on the 10th day of the 12th and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar after the holy Hajj. It also occurs approximately two months and 10 days after Eid al-Fitr, another big religious festival that marks the end of Muslims' holy fasting month of Ramadan. ■
