ALGIERS, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Algeria's Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf received a phone call on Monday from his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss the latest developments following the Israel-Iran conflict.
According to a statement from the Algerian Foreign Ministry, Araghchi briefed Attaf on the repercussions of Israel's attacks, warning that they continue to threaten regional security and stability.
In response, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria's firm condemnation of the "Israeli aggression" and stressed the urgent need for the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibility in upholding international law and the UN Charter.
He stressed that Israel's multi-front assaults have plunged the region into a cycle of violence and instability, urging immediate international action to halt further escalation and restore peace.
In a major escalation of regional tensions, Israel launched large-scale airstrikes early Friday, killing several military commanders, scientists, and dozens of civilians. Iran responded with retaliatory strikes later that day, and the exchange of fire continued into Monday. ■
