LOS ANGELES, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel's superhero film "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" dominated the North American box office this weekend with an estimated 118 million U.S. dollars, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.
The reboot, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Fantastic Four, is the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, the Fantastic Four must face their most daunting challenge yet.
Directed by Matt Shakman, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn, among others.
Internationally, the film earned an estimated 100 million dollars this weekend, pushing its global haul to 218 million dollars.
It holds an 87 percent approval rating based on over 300 reviews on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes to date, and received an "A-" grade from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore, which uses a standard scale from A+ to F.
Another superhero reboot, Warner Bros. and DC Studios' "Superman," dropped to second place with 24.86 million dollars on its third weekend. The film has grossed 289.5 million dollars in North America for a global cume of 502.7 million dollars through Sunday.
Rounding out the top three, Universal and Amblin's sci-fi blockbuster "Jurassic World Rebirth" generated 13 million dollars on its fourth weekend for a North American total of 301.5 million dollars. ■
