KAMPALA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan security agencies on Wednesday launched joint operations to combat the rising kidnap-for-ransom cases in the East African country.

Martin Okoth Ochola, Inspector General of Police, in a statement said the police and military have intensified intelligence operations, patrols and visibility across the country to detect and deter further kidnap cases.

He said at least 42 cases of kidnap for ransom, ritual sacrifice, crimes of passion and self-kidnap have been reported and investigated in the past four months in the country.

"We condemn these acts of criminality. Our resolve to ensure safety and security in the country is total," he said.

The police chief urged the public and parents in particular to take keen interest in the movement of the children who are so vulnerable to kidnapping.

He said the security agencies have established a 24-hour emergency center where cases of kidnap can be reported.

The security agencies are getting worked up as the previously uncommon crime is on the rise.
