BEIRUT, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said on Monday that Lebanon must draw maritime borders with Israel considering joint oil fields.

"Signing a peace agreement with Israel is not an issue related solely to the presence of joint oil fields between the two countries. The oil and gas that exist in the Lebanese territories belong to Lebanon," Bassil was quoted as saying by the National News Agency.

Bassil said that there are a lot of joint oil fields between countries in the world and if these countries agree to divide the revenues of this wealth fairly, peace will prevail.

He emphasized the need to draw the maritime borders with Israel under the supervision of the United Nations or with the U.S. intervention which will restore the right of the Lebanese to their territories.

Lebanon has an unresolved maritime border with Israel that involves a triangular sea area of about 860 square km extending along the edge of three of its 10 offshore energy blocks.

The United States mediated between Lebanon and Israel to end the dispute over maritime borders but failed to reach any positive results.
